چکیده

535] A new and unique building vibration isolation pad has been developed utilizing alternating layers of elastomer and carbon fiber mesh. The carbon mesh reinforcement provides several distinct advantages over traditional steel plate reinforcement. Lower natural frequencies and/or smaller operating heights can be obtained for a given load. In addition, the carbon mesh forms both chemical and mechanical bonds with the rubber, increasing the ultimate load for delamination. This paper briefly discusses the analytical solution for stress and deformation in the new pads, and outlines the pad design methodology. Tests were performed on both carbon mesh and steel reinforced pads. Static load-deflection curves, dynamic stiffness values, and creep data are presented. Finally, the designs of a traditional pad as well as the new carbon mesh-reinforced pad are shown for a realistic problem.

Analysis of Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Isolators

An analysis is given for the mechanical characteristics of multilayer elastomeric isolation bearings where the reinforcing elements-normally steel plates-are replaced by a fiber reinforcement. The fiber-reinforced isolator, in contrast to the steel-reinforced isolator (which is assumed to be rigid both in extension and flexure), is assumed to be flexible in extension, but completely without fle...

Influence of Temperature and Moisture on the Compressive Strength of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers

The effect of moisture absorption and high temperature on the compressive strength of unidirectional IM7/977-2 carbon/epoxy resins have been investigated experimentally. The specimens were divided into 4 groups, and tested under 4 different conditions by varying the testing temperature and moisture parameters. The fiber orientation selected were 0o, ±45o and 90o...

Seismic Response of Standard Thermal Expansion Bridge Bearings

Elastomeric bridge bearings have a history of use in the USA of close to 50 years. They are capable of carrying large vertical loads and allowing horizontal movement with low lateral force due to the extreme flexibility of the elastomeric material. They require little maintenance, have no moving parts, have good longevity and are very economical. The elastomer in bridge bearings is usually eith...

Effect of Fiber Surface Treatment on Wear Characteristics of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polyamide 6 Composites

Ozone modification method and air-oxidation were used for the surface treatment of polyacrylonitrile(PAN)-based carbon fiber. The surface characteristics of carbon fibers were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The interfacial properties of carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (CF/PA6) composites were investigated by means of the single fiber pull-out tests. As a result...
